The Lifelong Learning Institute offers a wide range of courses designed to provide personal and professional growth to learners from all backgrounds throughout the county. With more than 100 courses typically offered each semester in areas such as Art, Brain Fitness, Career and Employment, History and Current Events, Personal Finance, and Wellness, learners can take courses in-person and/or online, with enrollment occurring on a rolling basis. Ever wonder how nuclear reactors work? What are the safety systems? How are nuclear sites cleaned up after they permanently shut down? Answers to these questions and more will be answered here! This course is for those with little to no knowledge of nuclear energy and will cover the fundamentals - including radiation basics, the mining and enrichment of uranium, the fabrication of nuclear fuel, the main types of commercial nuclear reactors, and how they generate electricity. You will also learn about safety systems in a nuclear power plant, the role and activities of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, major accidents, and the future of nuclear energy.

Please note: If you are aged 60+ and your class is eligible for tuition waiver, you have to register via fax, in-person or mail to receive tuition waiver for the first time. You will still have to pay the fee for the class. After the initial registration, you can register online.
